Kojonup Destination Weddings

Thinking about a country wedding in Western Australia's Great Southern? Here is why couples pick Kojonup for the day itself, and how to sort the part most couples leave until last: where everybody sleeps.

Getting married in the Great Southern region

Many couples choose to tie the knot at a wedding destination, often in far away, exotic places, rather than in the local church or registry office. Some choose to carry out their ceremonies in churches, beaches, farms, caves or forests, and the Great Southern region offers a vast array of settings that could be perfect for your destination wedding. Here you can find fantastic views of the ocean waters, wineries and bushlands of Western Australia.

Kojonup, a quaint rural town in the south, is not only known for its charming annual Kojonup Show. It is also a great wedding destination for those seeking a one-of-a-kind ceremony and reception. With its rich history, this town is home to heritage sites and establishments boasting unique architecture, providing a picturesque backdrop for any special event.

Why Kojonup

A small town made for a private wedding

If you are driving from Albany, it will take you less than 2 hours to reach Kojonup. It is a small town with only a population of 1,980, making it the perfect place for a special and private destination wedding. Here are the four reasons couples keep choosing Kojonup for their matrimonial union:

  1. Rustic barn and farm weddings
  2. Sumptuous local cuisine
  3. Local attractions for the couple and guests
  4. Great accommodation for the wedding party

Reason one

Rustic barn and farm weddings

Getting married surrounded by nature's beauty is one of the reasons why destination weddings are still in style, and Kojonup's landscape, with its enchanting fields and gardens, creates a little sanctuary for you and your partner when you are exchanging vows.

If you dream of having a rustic theme, getting married on a farm or in an old family barn are some of your options. Accents of wood, hay, grass, flowers and trees will give your wedding a relaxed and laid-back ambience that your guests will love.

A barn or farm also gives you more space for people and decorations: a blank canvas you can creatively modify to suit yourselves. And it hands your photographer plenty to work with, with tractors, barn furniture, open fields and wooden walls as backdrops for the wedding album.

Reason two

Sumptuous local cuisine

Having a wedding in a place other than your hometown gives you the opportunity to try the cuisine and delicacies of another place. With Kojonup's rich local culture, you can expect that delicious meals will be served at your wedding reception.

You have the option to hire a chef from the area and have them create a unique menu for your reception; local chefs offer a wide variety of cuisine, from Mediterranean to Mexican and Modern Australian. You can also use caterers in Kojonup for buffet-style dining. If you and your partner love seafood, serving fresh fish and shellfish is possible because nearby towns like Perth and Albany have access to Western Australia's oceans, and local vineyards and distilleries can pour local wines and liqueurs at your reception.

Reason three

Local attractions for the couple and guests

Your guests will have free time before or after the ceremony, and Kojonup rewards it. A destination wedding here doubles as a country weekend away for everyone on the list.

One of the places to visit in Kojonup is the famous Kodja Place and its Rose Maze. Kodja Place is a centre built to focus on and promote the local and Indigenous culture in Kojonup. You and your family can explore the Kodj Gallery and learn about the Noongar people, and how their practices and material culture shaped the town into what it is now.

The Rose Maze is one of the town's highlights, housing over 100 types of Australian-bred rose. The maze's pathways also share the Three Women's Stories, a chronicle of Australian women's experiences in Kojonup through the years. More than one wedding guest has left with rose ideas for their own garden.

Other local attractions are part of Kojonup's history and heritage: explore the Railway Station, the Old Post Office, the Military Barracks and the Heritage Harness Display on a family-friendly tour that kids and adults will both appreciate. And if some of your guests are into sport, the town has recreational facilities where they can play golf, swim, or hit a football or tennis ball around while passing the time.

Reason four

Great accommodation, sorted before the venue is even decorated

Since you are having a destination wedding, most of the people attending will travel to get here, and a comfortable sleep is a must. Choosing great accommodation for your guests matters as much as the venue itself.

Where the wedding party sleeps

Cornwall House is a 12 room motel on the Albany Highway in the middle of town, and wedding-guest lodging is a job we know well. Every room is air-conditioned with a private ensuite, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee facilities, a mini refrigerator and microwave, and our contactless check-in from 2pm means nobody is waiting at a reception desk in their good clothes.

Comfort, convenience and security are crucial when booking rooms for a special event, and small local accommodation gives your guests an authentic taste of the town's hospitality. Rooms are quiet at night, so everyone gets a proper sleep before the big day, and the morning after it.

Queen rooms Couples on the guest list, the bridal party, and anyone flying solo.
Twin with access Two king singles and an ambulant-access ensuite, ideal for older relatives.
Family rooms Queen plus king single, sleeping 3 to 4; wheelchair-access option.

Book every room and the whole motel is yours for the wedding weekend. The full inclusions for each room type are on our accommodation page.

How couples usually book us for a wedding

Kojonup is a small town, and small towns have a fixed number of beds. Lock the rooms in as soon as the date is set, or the overflow ends up in the next town up the highway, with a long country drive at the end of the reception. Here is the order that works:

  1. Lock in your venue and date first. The rooms only matter once you know the weekend.
  2. Count who is staying overnight. Couples, singles, families with kids, and anyone who needs an accessible room.
  3. Send one group enquiry rather than twelve separate bookings. Tell us the date, the room count and the mix, and we will work out the fit with you. You can also call us on (08) 9831 0214 or email stay@cornwallhouseaccommodation.com.au.
  4. Share the arrival details with your guests. Contactless check-in runs from 2pm, so the wedding party can arrive any time from 2pm onward, even stragglers rolling in after the ceremony rehearsal runs long.
  5. Book direct for the best rates. And point far-flung guests at our Perth to Albany drive guide so the trip down becomes part of the weekend.

Questions couples ask us

Does Cornwall House host wedding ceremonies or receptions?

No, we are a motel rather than a wedding venue: our role on your big day is the good night's sleep on either side of it. The ceremony and reception happen at your chosen venue around Kojonup, and your guests stay with us, right in town on the Albany Highway. Our companion guide to venues and services in Kojonup covers the venue side.

How many wedding guests can Cornwall House sleep?

We have 12 rooms: Queen rooms for couples and singles, a Twin room with ambulant access, and Family rooms that sleep 3 to 4 (with a wheelchair-access option). Book every room and the whole motel is yours for the weekend.

Can we block-book rooms for our wedding?

Yes. Send one group booking enquiry with your date, room count and guest mix and we will work out the fit with you, or call (08) 9831 0214 during reception hours. One enquiry beats twelve separate bookings, for you and for us.

What if guests arrive late, or want to come back late after the reception?

Contactless check-in runs from 2pm, so guests collect their key whenever they arrive rather than racing a front desk's closing time. And because every guest has their own key, coming home late from the reception is no drama at all.

How far is Kojonup from Perth and Albany?

Kojonup sits on the Albany Highway roughly halfway between the two: about 3 hours from Perth and about 2 hours from Albany. Guests travelling from both ends meet in the middle, which is part of what makes it work so well as a destination wedding town.

When should we book the rooms?

As soon as your venue and date are locked in. Kojonup is a small town with a fixed number of beds, and on a wedding weekend they go quickly; booking early keeps the whole wedding party in town instead of spread up the highway.
